2-0670 MOVING BEYOND THE CLINIC: TRACING THE TIDEMARKS OF TECHNOLOGY IN MEDICINE

Wednesday, November 16, 2011: 18:00-19:45
Montreal Convention Center 510D (Palais des congrès de Montréal)

Advancements in communication technology have massively increased the exchange of information and changed human interaction. Combined with access to capital and free market economies, they have also taken contemporary healthcare beyond the clinic. Telemedicine, novel diagnostic tools, and new modalities of transnational care are altering meanings of knowledge, resources, and access. They are re-scripting traditional power structures in doctor-patient relationship, modifying divides between urban and the remote access to care, and complicating universal and local understandings of treatment. These examples also illustrate how technologies may blur the distinctions between medical systems, locations, languages, epistemologies and ontologies. Simultaneously, the ways in which technologies are used are shaped by cultural contexts and there is need to unpack the supposed ‘universal', standard use technology with the cultural and structural variance accounted for. This panel examines how the interaction between technology and culture shifts the ways in which patients seek help and doctors provide treatment. It also explores how technology creates differences in access to medicine, changes illness narratives, and influences how material and non-material forms of care are sought. Finally, it describes how notions of community, kinship, and power are reshaped as a result of these processes.
